Coaching...

The club is divided into squads, which are organised and reviewed regularly by the Chief Coach. Factors such as age, attitude, attendance, punctuality, ability to keep pace in a particular group, training and competetive performance are taken into consideration when selecting appropriate squads for each swimmer.

For the swimmers to benefit and develop from the planned training programme it is important that attendance is frequent and regular with minimal absences only as essentially necessary or when advised. Punctuality is essential for the smooth and efficient running of the whole programme.

A positive attitude towards training is important and it begins with the determination to start on time and obtain full value out of the training time available. The programme provides a number of progressive graded coaching and training groups which should clearly show a recognisable ladder of progression for each swimmer's development. Swimmers are expected to remain for the duration of each training session unless otherwise directed by the coach.

Swimmers are coached by a team of 10 - 12 volunteers led by the Chief Coach. The Chief Coach is appointed by the Committee and is the only salaried member of the team. All other coaches and helpers give their time voluntarily. All poolside helpers are qualified to at least ASA Assistant Teacher level and many hold higher teaching qualifications. Land training is co-ordinated by a gymnastics coach.

The present Chief Coach has been involved with the club in a variety of roles over the last 10 years becoming Chief Coach in 1999. Many of those helping have also been involved for a number of years. Thus the team provide continuity for the swimmers, in many cases seeing them develop from novice to district standard and beyond. The club is always on the look out for additional helpers - anyone interested should contact the Chief Coach either by email or in person at Chesham Leisure Centre.
